Is your porch looking a little bare this winter? Instead of splurging on store-bought décor, bring the holiday spirit to life with a DIY topiary snowman project. It’s a fun, affordable way to turn simple materials like foam balls and a few thrifted treasures into charming decorations that make your home feel warm and welcoming.
These adorable snowmen aren’t just cute; they’re the perfect weekend craft for the whole family. Kids will love helping out gluing, stacking, and dressing up their snowmen with hats, scarves, and buttons. It’s a hands-on way to spark creativity, keep little hands busy, and make memories that last long after the holidays.
With just a few basic craft supplies, you’ll create sturdy, charming snowmen that can be customized with any old hats, scarves, or buttons you have on hand.

So, how do you make these guys? Grab the kids, crank up the Christmas tunes, and get ready to turn a few simple materials into your family’s favorite new holiday tradition! No fancy tools or skills required!
What You’ll Need
- 3 foam balls in different sizes (about 4″, 6″, and 8″ diameter work well for a small one, but if you want a larger snowmen, look for larger foam balls)
- 1 wooden dowel (about 18–24″ long)
- White acrylic paint and a paintbrush (optional for smoother finish)
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Old hats and scarves (check your closet or a thrift store)
- Mismatched buttons, felt, or scraps for face and “buttons”
- Heavy base (bricks, rocks, or a planter with soil)
- Scissors
- Permanent marker or black paint (for eyes and mouth)
Step 1: Paint and Prep the Foam Balls
To hide any seams or imperfections and make your snowman look smooth and snowy, give them a coat of white acrylic paint.
Let the paint dry completely before moving on.
Don’t worry if the paint isn’t perfectly smooth, once assembled, hats and scarves will cover any rough spots.
Another suggestion is to sand the foam using a fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out the rough edges. Or you can save yourself some trouble by purchasing commercial Styrofoam Smooth Finish from hobby stores.
Step 2: Stack and Secure the Snowman
Start by gently pushing the wooden dowel through the center of the biggest foam ball (this will be the base). Slide the other two balls onto the dowel, stacking them largest to smallest.
A word of caution: foam balls are prone to damage due to their delicate and cellular structure. What you can do is to pre-drill or puncture a hole first before inserting the dowel to minimize tearing.
Leave a few inches of dowel sticking out at the bottom for stability.
- Foam adhesives: Glues made specifically for foam are your best bet for bigger builds. They bond well without melting or damaging the material.
- Foam-safe CA Glue: Perfect for quick fixes. Just test a small spot first. Some “foam-safe” versions can still cause melting.
- PVA glue (white or school glue): A classic choice for simple projects like sticking foam to paper or wood. However, it dries slowly and isn’t the strongest option but it gives you time to prep or reposition the foam balls if needed.
- Epoxy: Two-part epoxy allows for a super-strong hold. It’s tough and long-lasting, though heavier than regular craft glue.
- Flexible adhesives: For props or projects that get handled a lot, use a flexible glue like canopy glue or flexible PVA. It bends without cracking, keeping your work intact.
Add a dab of hot glue between each ball to keep them snugly together. However, use a low-temp glue to prevent the foam from melting. If you don’t want to risk it, there are alternatives, such as:
For extra durability, especially if your porch is windy, glue the dowel into the base (like a planter with soil or a couple of heavy bricks) so your snowman stands up tall.
Step 3: Dress Up Your Snowman
This is the fun part! Wrap a scarf around your snowman’s “neck” (where the top and middle balls meet) and tie an old hat on top.
Use hot glue to secure them if needed, especially if your porch gets gusty.
Let kids pick their favorite accessories or mix and match for a quirky, cheerful look.
Step 4: Add the Face and Buttons
Glue on mismatched buttons or felt pieces for the snowman’s “buttons” down the front. Use a permanent marker or small circles of black felt for the mouth and eyes.
For a nose, glue on a small piece of orange felt, paper shaped like a carrot, or even a painted pebble. Plastic carrots can also be used if you want a more polished nose for your snowmen.
Get creative! No two snowmen need to look alike, and a crooked smile or silly hat only adds charm.
Step 5: Place and Secure Your Snowman
Set your finished snowman in a porch corner. If you’re using a heavy base, make sure it’s stable. Bricks or a weighted planter work well.
If it’s breezy, add extra weight or secure the base with a bit of outdoor-safe glue or tape.
Double-check that your snowman can’t tip over easily, especially if kids or pets will be nearby.
One big snowman would be a great addition to your Christmas decor, but adding a few smaller ones will create a jollier ambiance. The more the merrier. Creating a family of snowmen will also keep your kids busy and happy!
Tips for Success

- Use a sharp knife to carefully pre-poke holes for the dowel if the foam is tough.
- Let each layer of paint dry fully before stacking to avoid smudges.
- If your snowman wobbles, add more weight to the base or wedge it against a porch railing.
- Hot glue can get hot, help younger kids with gluing steps.
Avoiding Common Mistakes
- Don’t use lightweight bases, your snowman may topple in the wind.
- Avoid too much glue between the foam balls, which can melt the foam or create messy drips, just a little dab is enough.
- Skip waterproof paints if your snowman will be sheltered, but use them if it’s exposed to rain or snow.

Thank you ❤️
I love these!
I’m confused about the “base.” In your description, you say, “If your snowman wobbles, add more weight to the base or wedge it against a porch railing.” You even mention bricks or rocks. Do you mean to set the snowman in a somewhat shallow planter that is weighted down with the brick or rocks?
Thank you for your creativity.
Thank you ❤️
Regarding the base, you can use anything heavy enough to keep the snowmen upright. A shallow planter could work as well, you just need to find a way to “connect” the snowmen to it. If you just use a normal planter or some bricks (the ones with holes), it may be easier. I hope that this helps.
